March 29, 2008: The BIG Event! Thousands of people gather just outside the basketball arena, waiting to get their hands on the tools and work for the people around town who have requested for assistance in doing some work in their house.

Okay, done with the formality. Basically, Big Event is like a mass gotong-royong project, except instead of cleaning up public areas, we go to specific people’s houses and do work for them. What do we get? Well, some sense of doing good, extremely tired bodies, lots of fun, dirty clothes, new friends, and some free sausages and drinks for breakfast. You can sign up as an individual, then they assign you to a group, or you can sign up as a group. I joined the Navigators group. We were divided into 3 teams. (Btw, for those who were busy asking me to post pics of chun girls, probably this is the closest I’ve come so far.)

Yeah these are the Navigators people. Arguably the group I spend the most time with. Great bunch of people (and some of them can be quite lame.) Anyway, our team were sent to help a family do some painting. So, after getting our tools, we went straight to the place. Few pics were taken on the way there. Kids, do not try this on any truck. We probably could’ve found better ways to get there.

This was the house we were supposed to paint. (This is how it looks now. Forgot to take a before pic).

Had lotsa fun painting. Took lotsa lame pics as usual. Must bring some of the CA® quality to the US!

Before after pics:

Don’t think just coz we work for free, we do low quality work okay! Check out how smooth our paint texture is (of course, I took the part with the best texture.)

Debriefing from the nice lady we worked for. Apparently, she’s a Christian too, so before we left, we took a group picture, then she prayed for all of us, the best form of payment anyone can ask for. She was very pleased and excited with the result, so we thank God for that.

Notice the white dots on all of our noses? Yeah, I started that, and somehow it caught on. Anyway, after the pictures and prayer, we left. And of course, the universal culture, after work —–> MAKAN !! For those of you who watched Idiocracy, this place will be a familiar place to you. Of course, in the show, this place had a not so decent name after the average IQ of the people dropped.

So, that wraps up a wonderful Saturday morning for me. Made some new friends, had more time to talk nonsense and do nonsense with the friends I already know, and got to try new food. YAY !
Just added, a movie/picture presentation of the gotong-royong.
